How Old Ankle Sprains Still Affect Your Knees and Back

By Mamta Sharma
Functional Manual Therapist at VARDĀN

An ankle sprain may feel like a past injury. But in many cases, it is not fully resolved. It simply adapts.

What most people do not realize is that an old ankle injury can continue to alter how the entire lower body functions. Even after pain reduces, movement patterns often remain compromised.

The ankle plays a critical role in load absorption, stability, and movement control. When its mobility or support is affected, the body continues to move, but not efficiently. It compensates.

Reduced ankle function shifts load upward. The knee begins to handle forces it was not designed to manage. The hip loses mechanical efficiency. The lower back starts compensating for the lack of control below.

Over time, this creates a chain reaction of dysfunction. Knee discomfort, hip tightness, and recurring lower back pain are often not separate issues. They are linked to unresolved ankle mechanics.

The injury did not disappear. The body simply adapted around it.

Common Causes & Symptoms
  • History of ankle sprain followed by incomplete rehabilitation
  • Reduced ankle mobility during walking, squatting, or lunging
  • Instability or lack of control during single leg movement
  • Knee discomfort during stairs, running, or training
  • Hip tightness or reduced lower limb efficiency
  • Lower back stiffness after prolonged standing or activity
  • Uneven load distribution between left and right side
  • Recurring pain despite rest or basic strengthening
Correction Strategy
  • Do not ignore previous ankle injuries even if pain is absent
  • Restore ankle mobility before increasing load or training intensity
  • Rebuild stability and control through single leg work
  • Correct movement asymmetry between both sides
  • Focus on movement quality rather than only strength
  • Integrate ankle function into full body movement patterns
  • Follow a structured assessment based correction plan
How FMT™ Helps

At VARDĀN, Functional Manual Therapy identifies how an old ankle injury continues to influence movement across the entire system.

  • Detailed assessment: Identifies loss of ankle mobility and compensation patterns
  • Joint correction: Restores proper ankle mechanics and load distribution
  • Neuromuscular activation: Improves stability and movement control
  • Movement retraining: Reduces excess stress on the knee, hip, and spine
  • Performance restoration: Rebuilds efficient, resilient, and sustainable movement

Your knee and back are often responding to what your ankle is no longer doing well. Correct the source, not just the symptom.
